Eric's Notebook: Don’t Forget To Invest in Yourself

Life can get crazy. We have too many things to do and only so much time in the day. We prioritize what we think is important. But things can get lost along the way.

For example, we often place making time to learn and grow on the back burner. I’m as guilty of this as anyone. I spend most of my workday helping clients. After hours, I don’t even want to look at my desk. 😵 I’m ready to do, well, just about anything else!

The trouble is that our industry never stops evolving. Stagnation isn’t a viable option if you still want to do this work. The future depends on our ability to keep up.

Saying “I’m busy” is only an excuse for so long. Eventually, you need to make time to invest in yourself. Don’t worry, it’s not as big of a commitment as you think.

Start by identifying the things you don’t know and areas you’d like to improve. Maybe you want to learn how AI models view your client’s websites, or you want to build your first Gutenberg block. If you’re solely focused on business, you may want to improve foundational skills like marketing and communication. The possibilities are endless.

Next, sit down and create a learning plan. Sure, it could be enrolling in a course (The WP Minute has some great offerings – just saying…). But in-person events can also be a great place to learn and network.

The great part is that you can tailor the plan to your needs and limitations. You can pack up and head to an event. Or you could spend 15 minutes per day digging into your chosen subject. There’s no wrong answer.

I chose the latter back when my daughter was small. She spent summer days with her grandparents. I used my extra morning quiet time to work through a series of courses. A little effort here and there added up to new skills. It’s a practice I’d like to return to. The point is that we can find a way, even during the busy times.

Seriously, it’s great that you spend time taking care of everyone else. But don’t forget about yourself and your goals. Look for learning opportunities and take advantage of them – however large or small. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and maybe boost your business. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain.
